Interestingly, I visited a large dairy operation in the lower mainland as part of a tour while with the Investment Agriculture Foundation. It had funded, in part, the building of what, in many respects looked like a mini-refinery. This dairy mixed cow manure and truckloads of stale-dated produce from grocery wholesalers and retailers and were able to produce gas it was able to feed back into the Fortis natural gas network. There was no smell to the operation and added a profitable augment to the dairy itself. I have wonder whether a similar approach, with a bit of funding help, can be taken to address the composting problem.
Spa Hills Composting Facilities
This is an ongoing issue for folks in Silver Creek, Yankee Flats and Glenemma with the smell and also the composting facility being non-compliant with regulations and by-laws
Where the candidates stand

Dennis LaPierre
This is indeed an issue for those living nearby the facility

Melanie BeckettUltimate goal would be to work with the facility owners to bring it up to compliance standards
I think composting facilities are great. This facility has admittedly had issues. The water samples taken were above recommended levels, and there needs to be a proper assessment done. The CSRD currently has a petition to the supreme court. I have had a tour of the facility and would like to look at the whole timeline. I plan to do a FOIPPA request for all documentation that I can access and work with the facility to meet compliance standards.

Re: Spa Hills Composting Facilities, Dennis LaPierre and Melanie Becket Dennis, you have gone to great lengths to expound on your past accomplishments, but very little other than one sentence: " This is indeed an issue for those living nearby the facility" You suggest spending taxpayer dollars to fix the problem; wrong. It is not our problem; it's SPA Hill's problem, and that problem is now before the Courts. I don't think that you should rely only on past accomplishments to get yourself elected. Stand up and be heard. Otherwise, you are a fossil in the past. To Melanie: This is now a court issue that we, the taxpayers, are funding. I personally think it's way past that point: " That I will talk to them " If this is your approach to such a serious problem, I'm not sure that you are the best choice for the CSRD board, my opinion only
This is my advice to all of the candidates running. Regarding SPA HILLS composting. Historically this was never designed to be a commercial enterprise. Bringing in garbage from Penticton, Kelowna, Kamloops Salmon arm, Armstrong, Enderby and all the little hamlets in between is simply not sustainable for this populated area. It also brings unneeded extra garbage to our local landfills. In my opinion, there are no studies needed. If this business is to be allowed to continue it must be possibly shut down and cleaned up and then maybe allowed to start very small to just accommodate our local community. This has nothing to do with a Green initiative. Our community understands the value of well run composting facilities. This is not that. The candidate that recognizes the destruction that this poorly run business has created for a decade or more will get my vote. The time has long passed for studies and assistance. Trust has been broken.
https://sites.google.com/view/area-d-wildfire-society/home This is a link to our AREA D WILDFIRE SOCIETY, we will be looking for support from the new director. It is this communities belief that proactive community first responders are the difference between a catastrophic wildfire and one that gets stopped and its tracks when it’s small. We are working on safety plans and taking training. This society respectfully ask for all support that the CSRD could give to this initiative. I would like to see the candidates respond with a commitment regarding building permits. I have not read in anybody’s statements that YOU WOULD NOT BRING IN BUILDING PERMITS. I would just like to have that commitment in writing. THANK YOU
